Include the certification name, issuing body and date obtained. If the certification has an expiration date, include it. If there’s a credential number or license number that employers commonly verify, include that too.

What to Skip

Don’t list expired certifications unless you’re actively renewing them (and note that on the resume). Don’t list certifications that are irrelevant to the job. A forklift license on an accounting resume adds nothing.

Don’t include training courses that don’t result in a recognized certification. “Attended a leadership workshop” isn’t a certification. Keep this section for credentials that have been formally assessed and awarded.

Certifications and ATS Systems

Most Australian employers use ATS platforms that scan for certification keywords. Include the full certification name and the common abbreviation. Write “CPA (Certified Practising Accountant)” at least once, so the system catches both the acronym and the full term.

For trade certifications, include the unit code. “White Card (CPCCWHS1001)” is more specific and more searchable than just “White Card.” ATS systems in the construction industry often filter specifically for these codes.

Investing in the Right Certification
